What are your tips and tricks to having a polite stud? How do you deal with pushiness or mouthiness? If raising from a foal, how do you handle & socialize stud prospects? What age (if any) do you isolate them? Maybe only during breeding season then put in a herd for the winter? Can you re-socialize an older stallion that has been isolated most of his life? What are red flags for you to decide to geld? **A good stallion makes a GREAT gelding ;) Training stallions is a topic that not enough people (from any breed) really discuss in detail. They are like any other horse, but then they aren’t. We need to be extra diligent. My main experience has been in re-training my guy as a mature Kiger stallion. So using horsemanship to curb some pushy behaviours. I’ve also worked with a few QH yearling studs and 2-5 year olds under saddle. I think the biggest thing is to maintain respect, personal space, absolutely not spoiling them, they need consistent/strict boundaries and they also need reassurance. Too often people are scared of studs so they’re unfair in their handling, we need to be firm but fair and still let them know when they did the right thing. Thoughts? Comments?
